Predictions for 2010

This morning in my inbox I found this opinion piece from Inman News: 

Real estate wish list, predictions for 2010


Reading through the predictions, I was struck by how many real estate professionals avoid commenting on social media and marketing changes in their predictions. Instead they choose to comment on the economy and housing for 2010. As Business Development for StrataXL Software Inc., an internet marketing company, this is not encouraging. 

Internet marketing should be right at the top of the Real Estate executive's mind. The consumer's are changing expectations regarding availability and ease of information, including rankings, comments and sharing abilities. This integration of social media is becoming the expected norm. These opinion pieces showed me that most executives aren't focusing on how to bring their business online in 2010, and they should be, or else they will be left scrambling to catch-up in 2011.

Even after the conference I was struck by how many agents didn't even have sites.  There was a lot of talk about twitter and facebook, but I really didn't see a lot of interest or effort in using social media over all.


I thought that it was clear that the general agents feels social media is a non starter marketing channel and if they do dedicate resources to it, they want to hire someone to manage it for them.

Too bad, they're taking the social out of it and not understanding that it falls flat on it's face without their own personal touch.

I wonder why this is?    Is there perhaps a belief that the people who are social network savvy and digitally inclined dont have money to sepend on real estate?  Even if that were true, the arms-length attitude is a major oversight in the value of social network marketing.  Information is easily shared and popularity for just about anything can be instantanious.  A buzz from within these networks is heard far and wide.  I would bet I hear the word facebook 5 of 7 days a week on the AP feed during the morning news.

If real estate professionals are avoiding, it sounds like there is an un-tapped market resource that StrataXL will bring to its users?

Absolutely . . . cold calling is done, knocking on doors is time consuming, delivering pumpkins and poinsettia's is costly with minimal results . . . the internet and social media are the way to "farm" your neignborhood from now on  . . . so you can either do what you've been doing in the past or you can start today to get out there with your web presence. I started with this site in my "farm" area LiveinStrathcona.com 4 years ago and my business has tripled. I used to struggle to hold on to 30% of the business, I now do about 90%. You have to forget about marketing your name and start marketing your neighborhood, that's what buyers are looking for and sellers want to deal with the expert in their area so you want to be what the public sees when they type in a google search.
